The swirl 2.0 (voted by unpopular demand)

Welcome back to The Swirl!

Previously on The Swirl we found out that Myrisha wrote a story that only had skeletons and clearly needed flesh. She should have done better but she done worse. After reading the criticisms of her fellow peers she decided to revamp her story and to launch The Swirl 2.0. Was she successful or not? We shall find out right now....

The beginning

Ted and Katie both lived in a small little town located in Crasberry. With a population of only 200 people Katie thought she'd never fall in love until she met Ted. Although Crasberry was a small town it possessed the heart of a big city. There were shops on every corner and neighbors were always there to lend a hand to anyone in need. People cared about each other and family was highly valued.

Katie

Katie worked at the local laundromat. It was the only place to wash clothes in the town. But it wasn't just a laundromat. It was the center of the universe in Crasberry. Not because clothes were of the
uttermost importance but because it was the birthplace of every rumor that ever spread through the town. If there was a rumor in town it certainly started at the laundromat. When Katie and Ted met it became quite the talk of the town.
Katie worked five days a week and most weekends. She spent her time playing instruments and singing at the local bars. At the age of six she competed in shows and singing competitions. Katie had bigger dreams than the town itself could provide. She worked anytime she could so her money would afford her the opportunity she always longed for; to leave the town.

Ted

Ted was a intern architect at a nationally known company, Drake Co.He stayed in a apartment right above the local laundromat from where Katie worked. Being the new person in town was different for Ted. After moving from the big city he tried his best to make friends with everyone. He would leave every morning and go to work in Tusman. In the afternoons he would drive back to Crasberry and have his one beer at the local bar.

The meeting

Most people would say it was almost as if fate put these two together. One night Ted came into the bar and sat down for his regular beer. When he looked up his eyes beheld the voice of an angel. Right before him on the stage Katie stood singing soft melodies from her lips. It was enchanting and captivating. He never saw someone so beautiful. Katie could feel Ted's eyes burning a hole through her skin because his look was so powerful. After she performed on stage she went out back for a break. He saw the opportunity to catch her attention and followed her outside.

Smoke came from her mouth as she took a cigarette from it. She quit smoking cigarettes but every now and then she would get the urge to taste one.

"You know those things are bad for you?"

"I can't seem to give these things up all the way yet. Forgive me for the action. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you before..."

"Yeah I'm new in town and I'm trying to get used to this small place. Maybe
you could show me around?"

Ted wasn't what she usually looked for in a man. He appeared to be a bit awkward and boyish. It was a new feeling she never felt before. Ted was definitely not like anyone she ever met.She smiled at him and then threw away her cigarette. She wiped the residue from the bud on her shirt and slowly extended her hand out towards his.

"My name is Katie."

The love

Romances are very rare in real life and even in movies. But what Katie and Ted had only comes around once in a lifetime.Fate brought them together and fate would soon tear them apart.Their love like most young people started out very intense and hopeful. The great loves are like shooting stars. They burn bright but after a short time they quickly fade away.

Both of them were happy together. Katie would fix him candle light dinners and picnics in the park.Ted would visit Katie almost everyday at the laundromat and drive home early just to see her perform at night. He fell in love with her from the day their eyes saw each other. As their relationship intensified Katie began to back away from Ted and hide her true feelings for him. Past relationships had taken their weight on her so much that she vowed never to trust again. The only problem with her promise to herself was that she broke it when she fell in love.

They tried to work out the many differences but the damage was too much for the relationship to withstand. They parted ways and made their peace but Ted could not let Katie go.Working at the laundromat where Ted worked was too painful so she eventually quit. Losing Katie was too much for the poor kid to handle. He sent her flowers everyday after their breakup for four weeks. After weeks without receiving any response he gave up. Going to work was dull. Lack of concentration caused his job performance to suffer. He lost apart of his soul.

Till We meet again

After weeks of crying Ted finally stopped caring. He heard all the rumors spreading through town about their break-up and more. Everyone knew Katie left him. The biggest rumor and to his surprise the truest part was that she left town. He hadn't seen her in weeks so of course it had to be true. There were plenty of occasions where he tried to accidentally bump into her hoping she would have answers to his questions.

Neighbors would slightly bow their heads anytime he would walk by their doors or stop in for a quick hello. He was not dead but it was as if the town felt his loss. Happiness was considered a blessing and love a virtue. So, of course they would only try to keep him in good spirits. Sadly, the town's sincerity only reminded him of his pain.

A few days later he left town and went to a concert in Tinsel. Tinsel was a very big city known for entertainment and casinos. He decided to go and have fun with his friends. Tommy, Jake, and Tim all came along for the time of their lives. The streets were filled with people celebrating the new year. It was 2012. Everyone came for the fun, festivities, and parties.

Ted was now a full employee at his firm after successfully completing his internship. Money was not a problem anymore for him because the salary he made was more than enough to afford one night of luxury in Tinsel. Him and the gang all went to a Marty-x concert that night. Marty-x was their favorite punk rock band to see in person, ever! After attending the concert they headed to the casinos and spent plenty of money at the bar. The next morning Ted awoke and went for a morning walk to clear his head. The fresh air cleansed his mind and spirit. The streets were quiet. Beer cans and confetti lay on the concrete. It was calm. He now believed in New Years and new possibilities. Life was finally headed in the right direction. The only thing missing was someone to share it with.

About a few blocks down from the hotel he stayed in there was an ice cream shop. Ted walked past it nearly three times the previous night but never saw it. The morning light directed his attention to the shop that sunrise. He walked in and stood in line waiting to try something new. Being in the shop reminded him of his childhood. It had an old style 60's look and fit so much into so little a space. The line was filled with customers. He could barely see to the front because everyone was quite crammed on the inside. When he turned around his eyes betrayed him for the second time. A vision in white stood before him. She was waiting in line a few customers in front of him.

"I'll take the vanilla and chocolate swirl please." she replied to the cashier.

"Why vanilla and chocolate?" Ted replied.

"That will be 2.25 miss." The cashier stated strongly.

He hoped she would turn around but she didn't. She continued to make conversation with the cashier. She handed him money, grabbed her ice cream cone and proceeded out of the line.

"I like both flavors. It's hard to decide on a flavor. Does that bother you?"

"No, it doesn't." A smirk appeared on his face creating dimples on both sides of his cheeks.

" I figure eating ice cream is better than smoking. Someone once told me that smoking was bad for my health so I quit for the last time."

" Then you transferred it to an ice cream addiction!" He was being sarcastic.

She laughed at his words as if they were revelations speaking to her innermost soul.Ted didn't bother to get ice cream after seeing her. He just wanted to talk. She sat down at a table next to him and continued making conversation. He felt butterflies beginning to form knots on the inside of his stomach. The feelings brought back old memories. Her hair was as shiny as silk and her eyes were a dazzling brown. She was perfect.

"How long have you been living here?" He asked.

"My whole life. Do we know each other?" She replied with a questioning look upon her face.

"No, you just remind me of someone I use to know..." He smiled again.

She had Katie's eyes and Katie's lips but it was not Katie. Indeed, before him was a rare woman marking the resemblance of his one true love. Unfortunately, she was not real. It was just a thought created on the inside of his head wanting to break free into reality. He walked out the shop with a smile on his face knowing that Katie was probably in a good place. He wished the best for her.Ted was content knowing they would never be together again. At least, anytime he would visit the little old shop in Tinsel city he would think of Katie.

So, that's it The Swirl 2.0. Nothing changed. Nothing improved. And yet it's still somehow better.lol just kidding. Hope you enjoyed it!

That was a really amazing story! (I really like the title:)
The story line was a really interesting (although a little cliche) but I especially liked how you brought some of the details back up again at the end.
You're also a very talented, descriptive writer. I could really picture all the things you were describing and it made your characters' world seem real!
Please keep writing. I would love to read more!

For your age, this is a decent piecce. You spend far too much time focused on telling rather than showing "he did this, he looked like this". Simply telling us this doesn't give the reader anything to imagine in their mind. Find ways of describing your characters and world without flat out telling us what is happening.

While the story is very predictable you have a decent grasp of dialogue and voice that gives the chaarcters a nice sense of depth and emotion.

There will be many more edits till this is as good as it can be, but I'm confident in your ability.
