And then you see vultures… Half as big as me. Huge. You’re thinking. There were three different kinds. What do I do when I’m the answerer? The good old bird book of course!

My latest Squills article recounts my YWS history with chickens -> The Chicken or the Egg.
I first began to love chickens when I was a little kid because every day after school from the time I was 3 or 4 until I was 10 I would go to my babysitter's house and she lived out of town on a small farm. She and her husband were older when they were watching me, so didn't keep lots of animals as they had when they were younger, but they did get dozens of baby chickens every year. The kids that she watched weren't allowed to interact with the bigger animals so we would admire them from afar, but we were allowed to hold the baby chickens if we behaved well. So seeing chickens especially when they're babies just seems very magical to me - almost like seeing a sticker on top of your report card, like the chicken's existence means someone has recognized I'm doing a good job in life. :') My cousins also kept half a dozen chickens as pets, and I thought they were pretty interesting to watch and admire.
I've always liked drawing birds. When I was in middle school my mom signed me up for a 1 year painting course, and for every. single. project. I just wanted to paint birds. I used to make really neat ones out of markers too and then cut them out and tape them on my mom's door at her work place - so for a while her entire door was filled with birds. Then I kind of got out of the habit of drawing or painting until I tried to get into a little bit of amateur digital doodling in 2020 for the sake of having cute doodles to go with my poetry (I did a whole 'National Poetry Month' with a bird theme in 2020) and then in addition to different YWS happenings my love of chickens kind of re-sparked culminating in starting COOP with Rook & giving out 60 chicken doodles for Christmas in July. It's been a journey!

It's not unusual for people in the town I live in to raise chickens, so I am sort of interested in considering to get chickens when I move into a house in a year or year & a half. But a lot of people have cautioned me against it, so I'm not quite sure yet. We'll see!

@lehmanf, to answer your question @Rook and I have released 2 editions of COOP (first with just yws entries and the 2nd with entries from open submissions to anyone on the internet) and both can be read here for free: coopzine.wordpress.com
We are working on a 3rd edition at the moment & I love to print out copies and give them to people or leave them in strange places.

Sounds mysterious!
I saw some chickens the other day and a "chicken mobile". I was amazed to see something like that and it looked really cool. Next time I go by, I'll take a picture of it.
