BEFORE YOU READ, know that this storybook is already closed. If you have not been invited, you may not post on this thread.

Welcome to the world of Pokemon!

It's that time of year again: the first week of the Pokemon League season, and it's your first Pokemon journey! This is the Kanto region, home of the original 151 species of Pokemon. The region is diverse and growing both in population and in size, and we're overjoyed to have you here. You may be from all walks of life, either having everything you could ever ask for, or having nothing; it doesn't matter because your future begins today.

Whether you're a student who has studied Pokemon your entire life or a newbie looking for adventure, you're in for the time of your life as you traverse the Kanto region, encountering new lands and meeting incredible people. In your Pokegear, you'll find a map of the region along with a log where you can keep track of your adventures and your Pokemon companions.

How you take this journey is solely up to you! You may make friends along the way or take yourself to the top all on your own. No matter if you're a Pokemon Trainer or breeder or just a lover of all creatures, you are about to discover yourself. Get ready, and have heart! The future awaits you.

Rules:
-You may have up to six Pokemon in your team.
-This storybook is rated E and will stay the same throughout the plot. Therefore,
-No swearing, and
-No adult behavior. This includes sex, gore, and intense situations that you wouldn't find on Cartoon Network.
-Since most of this storybook will involve a group, don't have your character be the epitome of woe. Enable socialization while keeping a dynamic character.
-All Pokemon in this SB must be Kanto Pokemon. The exception to this rule is by evolution/devolution only.
-The storybook will work by a Point System. One point per post.
-Post profiles below. The storybook will begin once all profiles have been posted. After the storybook begins, no OOC posts may be posted in the thread.

Spoiler! :
Party One
-David
-Eve
-Arty
-Hayden
-Nick

Party Two
-Jason
-Kristine
-Sinclair
-Hiverious

The way we'll handle two parties is simple. There're lots of things going on in the Pokemon world. The idea is that, instead of having "Main Party" and "Sub Party", we'll just have two storylines. Different routes, different times, different villains, and even different gym leaders. It works to where we can take creative license as to what Kanto looks like outside the map. Take Mt. Moon for example. While one party takes the popular path, one may be diverted due to construction or an incident, forcing them to summit the mountain itself. Therefore, one party may encounter rockets inside, and one may see the Clefairy ritual on the mountaintop. Stuff like that. We'll make it work.

Regarding The Map:

Additional Locations Not in the Games:
-Grimgey City
-Sunny Town
-Neon Town
-Stone Town
-Stone Mountain
-Sayda Island
-Pokemon Land Theme Park
-Porta Vista
-Mt. Spirit
-Dark City
-New Island
-Mt. Hideaway

You can look any of these places up on Bulbapedia (they appeared in the anime, but not the games) for more info. These additional locations are to help diversify the storylines of both groups. In these additional towns may be additional gyms or challenges. We're going to veer away from the games in this direction, going by the implication that there are many more than 8 gyms in Kanto. While these locations have been added, you can certainly add your own at your own will as we drive the plot along. Just make sure we know what you're doing.

Edit: Charlie, thanks to his CDO (in alphabetical order), organized all this lovely info for us here!

Name: Eve Blackwell
Age: Eleven
Gender: Female

Appearance (pic or description):

Spoiler! :
Image

Short blonde spikey hair, large green eyes, with freckles. She's tall for her age and lanky, and usually wears bright colours.

Personality:

Eve is intensely proud of her pokemon. She loves to play with them, and secretly believes that her pokemon are in 'the top percent of pokemon', you know? She spends a lot of time looking after them and training them, and tries her best to keep them healthy. She's young but she has lots of handbooks and guides packed into her gear about making the best food for your pokemon's health, and DIY guides on treating illnesses. She is usually pretty determined and confident, except when it comes to water. She's deathly afraid of the stuff, which causes her some stress when training her pokemon. No-one insults her pokemon, that's the best way to wind her up, but otherwise she is friendly and willing to use her limted skills on anyone's pokemon if they ask nicely.

History:

Eve grew up in Olivine city, with her rather well-to-do parents. She was an only child and used to getting her way, and her way was pokemon. Her room was covered in pokemon photos, posters, and stuffed toys. Her passion was supported by her parents, who were traders in special and rare pokemon. Eve grew up with pokemon coming and going, and each time one was traded away she would spend hours in tears, even if it had only came in a few days beforehand.
For her tenth birthday, the family had a rich-person cruise out to look at the pokemon around seafoam island. Eve was super-excited, and while leaning out to see a family of dewgong, managed to fall into the ocean. She was saved from drowning by a seel pup, and was rushed back to hospital to be treated for pnuemonia. She spent a few weeks in hospital, and much to the family's surprise, the seel had to be repeatedly shooed out of the hospital until the nurses finally gave up. When she finally emerged she was given her late birthday present- her prized Dratini. She still fears water, especially the ocean, to this day.

Pokemon Team:

Seel | Ellie
-Aqua Ring, Water gun, Ice Shard, Return

Dratini | Tina
-Wrap, Twister, Agility, Aqua Ring, Leer

Name: David
Age: 11
Gender: Male

Appearance: David is a strapping boy of average height for his age. He has short, choppy black hair and frosty blue eyes. He’s thin and lanky, but likes to think he can hold his own in a fist fight. He has large hands for a boy his age. He wears jeans and sneakers with a black T-shirt. As a going-away present, his dad gave him his old trainer’s jacket, short-sleeve and with a badge pocket inside. David wears it proudly.

Spoiler! :
Image

Personality: David is one of those boys who will sprain their ankle while playing outside and keep on going because they just don’t want to cry. Given that, he’s setting himself up to be a tough shell to crack when he gets older--maybe even now. Despite his “I’m a big boy” exterior, he’s a real softie when it comes to his Pokemon. He’s been best friends with Vash, his Charmander, since Vash was born. He loves to play games with his Pokemon, and has often been found outside from daylight to dusk wearing himself down either playing games with his friends and Pokemon, wrestling with Vash, or training for the day soon coming when he’d leave out on his own journey with his best friends. David’s been waiting for this day for a long time, and now that it’s finally here, he couldn’t be more excited.

History: Pallet town born and raised, David’s family has lived in the same house his entire life. Out from the town on a patch of farm land, David has learned to be his own person through playing and loving his Pokemon. He got Charmander from Professor Oak himself when he was 7 years old, and ever since, they’ve been best friends. Nothing really exciting or disastrous has ever happened to David or his family, which leads his parents to worry that he may be unable to cope were something bad to happen to his family or himself while out on the road. Despite this worry, they’ve prepared David for what he can encounter out on his own, and have encouraged him to make great friends along the way.

Scratch, Return, Ember, Counter (learning with David)

Name: Sinclair Audley

Age: 11

Gender: Male

Appearance (pic or description):

Sinclair Audley is a pretty good-looking boy of average build and considerable height for his age. His messy-but-organized hair is a dark blond that turns into a bronze-ish color if the light hits it just right, and his green eyes are always sparkling with mischief. They tend to shine brightest when he's been hit by an epiphany of sorts, or when he's plotting to steal attention. He's meticulous about his appearance and takes pains to make sure he doesn't look dirty or -heaven forbid- tacky.

Spoiler! :
Image

Personality:

Say what you want about him, but Sin is a very charismatic fellow. There are insane highs and unbelievable lows with him, but rarely anything in between. Everything either devastates, delights, or fascinates him, and he reacts accordingly with flourishing gestures and eloquent speeches. He's loud and virtually unforgettable, always making it a point to shine and avoid the background at all costs. Sin is the kind of kid who never seems to run out of energy and is always rushing about to and fro, with an intense dislike for staying put unless there's someone to impress with good behavior.

There's always this light in his eyes, and he's an avid learner as well as a dedicated student. He's usually curious and won't hesitate to ask questions if he has any. He's bold and daring, probably an explosion waiting to happen if there ever was one. However, if something fails to catch his attention, he's likely to think badly of it and pass it off as useless.

When the situation demands it, Sin can be a very good leader. He's organized and effective, as well as efficient. Even better, he knows his place in a hierarchy. Plus, he's got ambitious plans and isn't afraid of the hard work necessary to achieve them.

As a fan of theater, Sin is very much in tune with emotions, both his and others'. For this reason, he can be emphatic when he's not being patronizing if he likes you as long as he's not judging you in the right situations. However, it's important to note he's self-absorbed, vain, conceited, and has a flair for thinking himself better than others if they don't provide the right first impression. He twists things to his benefit quite often (sure he doesn't lie - he just omits so many facts he might as well have lied anyway. Also, it's called /acting/, not lying, if you really meant to act), especially because he adheres to a strict moral code that he /needs/ to bend, but never break.

Sin and his Pokemon have a very close relationship, but even then his Pokemon can get exasperated with him. For the most part, however, they're really good with each other. His Growlithe Cade is often looking out for his back, and Noah's kind of the buddy/sibling Sin never truly had, always hanging out with him and up to mischief and whatnot. All three tend to understand each other, especially when it comes to the drive to succeed no matter what happens.

History:

Sinclair Audley is the only son of former Elite Four champion and corporate magnate Sebastian Audley, and his wife Ingrid, who was a famous beauty queen and Pokemon breeder in her own right before she retired. The Audley family comes from very old money, and are very proud of their lineage. Though raised in relative luxury, Sin hasn't been spoiled and has been taught to pick up after himself. He's been homeschooled for most of his life, spending most of his time with a private tutor named Lawrence. Lawrence believes in an unorthodox manner of teaching, and thinks that the best way to teach a child is to expose him to the world and its problems.

Thus began Sin's unconventional education. He's been brought on field trips of all sorts, given strange exams that test his personality and cunning, thrown into situations that test his moral character, and most of all, honed his perfectionist streak. Sin had a relatively huge amount of pressure heaped onto him, but he's managed to handle it so far. He idolizes his father without a doubt, and will irrationally side with his father no matter what.

Sin's life has been built around a routine, so this adventure thing is relatively new and has him bouncing around, basking in complete freedom. Used to be he'd spend the weekends with his mother in a large family estate in Cinnabar Island (or shopping with her in various regions) before spending the rest of the week in and out of a condominium in Celadon City, where he and Lawrence crash during the nights when they're not out camping.

He's had encounters with wild Pokemon, and he enjoys studying Pokemon behavior more than capturing Pokemon, although he doesn't mind catching one of each. He's had a tendency to attract Pokemon by being /too/ loud, and it's not uncommon for him to pass it off as him being amazing and attracting Pokemon by sheer force of personality. Thus, his reationship with wild Pokemon is bittersweet, often ending up with him getting chased by a horde of Pokemon he disturbed attracted.

Growlithe | Cade
Tackle, Ember, Roar, Bite, Sunny Day

Name: Arthur "Art" Wilson
Age: 10
Gender: Male

Personality: A Super Nerd if ever you saw one. The only difference is that Art does manage to keep good hygiene. He loves to fiddle with mechanical things; indeed, the one Poke Ball he's ever used (and most likely every one he ever will) is a broken one he's picked up somewhere and repaired. He's equipped with a Pokedex, Pokegear, Pokenav, Poketch, C-Gear and probably any other Pokemon-themed electronic device you can think of, and he's done his homework when it comes to Pokemon and their abilities. Unfortunately, this can quickly become boring and/or irritating to his allies. He is also condescending on occasion to people if they make a mistake, though less so if they are a friend. And if there is something with particular scientific significance nearby he can become overly excitable. His occasionally hasty nature is highlighted by the single-syllable names he gives his Pokemon, as well as his own shortened name and those he uses for his human friends (which is ironic as the rest of the time he tends to use long scientific gabble).

History: Grew up in Viridian City. At the age of 6 he found a broken Poke Ball lying around Route 22, presumably from a failed capture by some newbie trainer travelling north from Pallet Town. He took it home and, thanks in part to the simple technical designs by Silph Co, was able to get it functioning again. Excitedly, he took it outside and, seeing a Magnemite swarm floating westward a few feet above the city, managed to capture one. The two quickly became friends and these events combined sparked Art's love for both Pokemon and science.

Not long after that, Art's family took a trip to Sinnoh where they spent a day digging in the Underground. While his parents jumped from spot to spot digging their way through Spheres and Star Pieces, Art discovered a Helix Fossil in the first spot he checked and spent all day carefully digging it out. Finally, his 10th birthday has arrived, coincidentally the day of the Indigo League Kickoff Festival in Viridian City, but he's decided instead that he'll go straight to Pewter City, visit the Museum and have them revive his fossil.

Name: Kristine Cook

Age: 10

Gender: Female

Appearance: Kristine is a pale, brown-eyed gal with red curls. She's usually the shortest one of her peers, but her bright personality stands out strong. Weak-boned, she was never an athlete of any sort, but her small stature can send her flying when she needs to run.

Spoiler! :
Image

Personality: With a constant smile, she is always seeking to have fun. When she's by herself, she's the typical quite, polite girl; but with friends, she's a sparky ball of fire. Friends include pokemon, especially her Pidgey. Kristine loves to spend time with pokemon, though this could result from her mother's pokemon orphanage. Even so, she still wishes to go out and meet new pokemon and collect as many friends as she can. Battling with them was never as interesting as being with them.

History: Kristine lives with her mother, overseeing a small pokemon orphanage near Cerulean City. Her dad is constantly out of town on business as a Pokemon historian. When Kristine was eight, her dad had come home after a long trip with a brand new pidgey (Peach) to make up for his year-long absence. At the start of the storybook, her dad had been out of town for fourteen months.

Ever since, Kristine and Pidgey have never been apart. Her Bulbasaur, Berry, is only a recent addition to her collection (Pokemon #2! 149 more to go!), but he has always been more than willing to help out around the orphanage. When Pidgey's jealousy got in the way, and the two of them would playfully poke at each other's buttons, Kristine adopted her second pokemon with permission from her mom.

Pokemon Team:

Pidgey | Peach
- Tackle, Quick Attack, Feather Dance, Gust

Bulbasaur | Berry
- Leech Seed, Vine Whip, Poison Powder, Razor Leaf

Name: Nick Lyell

Age: 10

Gender: Male

Appearance:
Spoiler! :
Image

Nick is short, even for his age, and is easily recognisable by his jacket with “The Collar”. (Indeed, among his friends, the name for such a wildly oversized collar quickly became known as a “Nick Collar”.) His wild brown hair falls naturally on one side but he is also sure to style it to keep it from getting in his eyes. He is rarely seen without his brown satchel which mainly contains useful restorative items but also his set of notepads of “field work”. His boots do look stylish but were still chosen to give him the best all-round protection across a wide variety of terrain.

Personality:

(tl;dr – excitable, well-meaning, naïve, full of advice on Botany/Geology, learns through “doing”, weak trainer)

Nick is generally a happy child, never more so than when he is making a new discovery (well, new to him at least). He is mainly interested in Botany and Geology – his notebooks contain extensive accounts of his experience in both fields – although he shuns mainstream teaching and schoolwork in favour of finding things out himself. As a result he finds it hard to learn, or take advice, from others.

He is always well-meaning and very much a team player. Nick is carefree with his items (as long as he has studied it completely to his satisfaction) and will often lend others potions without worrying about repayment. He is a naïve child but is distrustful of purely theoretical knowledge. Nick is never without “useful” advice, even if this makes him a little overhelpful and annoying.

Despite his somewhat preppy appearance, Nick is actually quite down-to-earth. He will sooner spend his money on potions or interesting ingredients, though when it comes to clothes he is more likely to find “something that matches” rather than something purely functional.

Nick is definitely not an aggressive Pokémon trainer. His skills lie in caring for and treating injured Pokémon, and it is here that his interest in Botany comes into its own. Still, his desire to discover and explore has lead him to this journey, and if that means he must battle in order to continue then that is just the way of it.

In battle he prefers to weaken the opponents Pokémon by inducing various status ailiments and avoiding their attacks. Unfortunately, this is not always a viable tactic, and so he is often left with his own injured Pokémon to tend to. Nick hopes to travel with strong party members on his journey to support him so that he may, in turn, help their Pokémon when the going gets tough.

History:

Nick was only six when his father died, leaving a substantial sum of money to him and his mother. After living in Saffron City all his life it was quite a shock when his mother moved with him to Pallet Town to run a farm on the outskirts of Route 1. It was here that Nick found his endless enthusiasm for exploration and discovery, much to the detriment of his education and schooling.

Still, it was on a school visit to Viridian Forest where he encountered and caught his first Pokémon: an Oddish (Daisy). He was allowed to keep the Pokémon, though his teachers berated him for wandering off from the group and bringing a Pokéball on a school trip!

With Daisy he was able to explore further and further from his home, and as the desire for adventure overtook him his absenses from school due to “illness” became more and more frequent. Nick did learn, however, how to take care of himself and the survival skills needed to sleep rough and still look respectable the next day.

Professor Oak met him when he was eight years old but, due to his far-from-exemplary attendance record, it was decided that he should not be given a starter Pokémon until he was “at least responsible enough to attend school”. He has never spoken to the Professor again.

Today, Nick has a feeling, things are going to be different. Today is the day for a real adventure. He has packed more into his satchel than he ever thought possible, and so today he is leaving for good.

This time, he's going to catch a Chancey.

Age: 11
Gender: Male
Appearance :
Spoiler! :

Personality: Shy and only a passing acquaintance of the word "assertive". He takes refuge behind his books, but isn't exactly the more street-savvy kid, and more often than not it's his pokemon that drag him out for some fresh air. He's been sheltered all his life, so he's got a naïve sense of optimism, tempered though it was by the few bad experiences he's gone through.

History: Only child, father disappeared before he was born. Raised by protective mother who had absolutely no objections to letting her baby boy stay cooped in his room reading. She got him his Cubone for his eight birthday, fearing he was getting lonely, and they've become inseparable. He got Kit off a local breeder after having noticed him on a school trip, gone home and used the age-old "Look miserable until mother asks you what you want" method.

Appearance (pic or description): Sean is a lanky boy. Some people say he has an eating disorder, but he doesn't know what that is. He is tanned and has black hair. Sean has rather unremarkable brown eyes. People often find them glazed over. He cares not for his appearance and will often step out before combing his hair and with an incorrectly buttoned up shirt.

Personality: Sean is a confused child who is still discovering himself. He is interested in spending more time with his pokemon than with other humans, but only due to the strong bond he has with them. He feels a sense of pride and guilt when battling other trainers as he feels he is exploiting his pokemon. Having said this, he understands it is a necessary evil in the society he lives in. David

Alright, David. You got this. You got this.

It had to be the hundredth time he’d said it to himself--repeatedly in his mind, he tried to convince himself that he was ready; but there was that one feeling in the pit of his stomach, right between the ham sandwich he’d eaten for lunch and the soda he’d chased it down with, that argued otherwise. It was like his mom had always told him: don’t talk to strangers, and never pay attention to that little doubting place in your belly.

Wow, moms knew it all.

David wondered if she would’ve taken measures to keep him to his journey. She probably knew he wouldn’t like to go it alone. At least, that’s what he heard her telling Nick’s mother right before assigning him as some kind of bodyguard for his old pal. Not that he minded, of course. It was just another chore...like taking care of Vash and Dax, only he needed more food.

But all of that needed to get out of his head.

David stared at his reflection in the mirror with determination in his eyes. There was a mesh of black hair and frozen blue eyes. A fiery confidence. A unique drive that told him that he was going to be the very best. Like no one ever was.

Toilets flushed behind him and David cringed at the disgusting smells coming from behind him. He covered his nose and picked up his Pokeballs from the sink, shirking out of the bathroom and out into the Viridian sun.

Alpha Weekend in Viridian City. It had always been David’s favorite event every year. Each time, he’d get on his bike early in the morning on that Friday and camp out in Viridian for the entire weekend, most of the time with Nick or one of his old friends from Pallet Town. Old friends who didn’t want to train Pokemon, or who couldn’t afford the time away from the farmland. So maybe David was lucky to be able to be here. And that meant he’d have to do his town justice and prove how great he was. For them.

Viridian was the biggest city David had ever seen. It didn’t even have the skyscrapers that he’d seen on TV specials from Saffron and Celadon, but Viridian was always bustling with people and Pokemon and smells of all sorts. If he hadn’t been so afraid of losing him, David would’ve had Vash walking next to him to keep him company. But he was afraid, so he’d have to be careful. After all, there had to be some kinds of thieves running around the city. There always were.

David grinned, thinking of all the places he was about to see, the people he would meet. And rivals. There had to be someone in this city who had the same feeling he did, and that meant that they were bound to clash from the start. But first things came first.

He had to find his buddy.

Nick | Viridian City | Carnival Day

The day was bright and filled with colour as Nick wandered along Viridian City's highstreet. Stalls packed with Pokémon plushies and local delicacies paved the streets as far as the eye could see, and the air was filled with the clamour of stall keepers' cries.

Try your luck at 'Pin the tail on the Tauros'!

Roll up, roll up: 'Whack a Diglett', only five coins a go!

Guess the weight of Geodude and win a prize!

Nick was speechless. He was at that delightful age where the world still dusted each day with surprises and magic, and yet not too old to understand the inherent dangers of walking alone in a big city. Instead he walked and gawked at the buildings, and the people, and the Pokémon, and his strong sense of curiosity lead him ever onwards.

Two giant banners stretched between the buildings bearing the words '100th Pokémon League Challenge'. It was a momentous day indeed. All over Kanto there would be people celebrating the centenary of the Pokémon League – trainers everywhere would be stocking up on items and preparing for the journey. And this year, Nick was one of them.

“What's up, Nick?” asked a boy standing next to him with a friendly nudge. “Meowth got your tongue?”

Nick was a little surprised by David's sudden arrival, but there was such a lot else going on he paid it little attention. Though he was only a year older, David was already a lot taller than Nick – a recent growth spurt meant that he was now a whole head above Nick and his clothes were having trouble keeping up.

Nick gulped and wondered how long he'd been staring with mouth wide open.

“It's just so...” he began, but the words trailed off again.

“So?” David repeated, the smallest amount of frustration appeared in the form of creases around his frosty blue eyes. Nick was a well-meaning kind of guy, but sometimes it just got too much.

“So...” Nick echoed, his eyes fixed on some far off stall. No doubt it would be an item shop or a stall selling rare species of plants – Nick was obsessed with them.

“So... what, Nick?”

“So... colourful!” he finished with a smile. “It really does look pretty with the banners and the costumes and confetti and--”

“Yeah,” said David scratching his head. “Y'know, I'm gonna check out the stalls over there. Feel free to join me once you've recovered from all the colours.”

With that, Nick was free to wander the city as he wanted. He wandered towards the nearest stall where a game of 'Spot the Voltorb' was underway. Nick immediately felt lost amidst all the new smells and sounds and colours, but that was the way he liked it.

Without a second thought, Nick headed off into the unknown.

“And try not to buy too many plants!” David called back, but Nick had already turned away.

Eve leaned against a building in relief, looking around with wide eyes. She’d been here once before with her parents, but they hadn’t had time to stop and look. Viridian was even larger than her hometown of Olivine, and if Eve was any judge, about three hundred thousand miles away by foot. She had never felt so dusty and grimy before in her life. With a sigh she pulled out a bottle of water from her pack, and for the first time in over a year, considered tipping it over her head to get rid of the sticky feeling. The sensation of water on her face would only be for a few minutes, and she would feel better all day... Eve shuddered, shook herself and pulled out her towel, rubbing at her face furiously.

With as much of the dust off of her face as she could get, she pried herself off of the wall and dragged herself down the street. Her pace picked up as she started noticing banners strung between buildings above her head, road-weariness forgotten among the bright colours. I wish I could show Ellie and Tina, but it’s far too hot for them today. Not after I got them so healthy. Eve reached down to pat the pokeballs at her hip absently, missing the great lump of a Seel against her leg and the Dratini curled around her shoulders like an extra scarf. Walking with Ellie was slow going unless they could find a river to walk alongside, and she had missed her on the long trek here.

The streets ahead were lined with stall after stall, selling pokemon dolls made of paper and pokemon treats, plastic flowers and candyfloss. There were also stalls with oversized plush dolls, gaudy toys and rare berries that no-one seemed to buy, but instead were awarded them after playing one game or another. Crowds of children surrounded these stalls, watching intently as the child in front tried their luck. Usually there were one or two adults standing a little off to the side, with half an eye on the children and the rest on each other as they gossiped and drank iced tea out of plastic cups.

Eve’s curiousity was piqued by these stalls, and she spent a few minutes at each watching how they were played. There was one where children threw a ball at a bunch of cans, trying to knock them down while a Magnemite tried to look inconspicuous. Eve looked around at the children, but none of them seemed to be worried, so she didn’t say a thing.

The next stall involved directing what appeared to be a blindfolded and idiotic Hitmonlee to pick up a toy from a pile in front of him, but he never seemed to follow instructions quite right, always missing the toy by a few centimetres. Nevertheless, kid after kid tried to direct him in picking up their favourite plushie, and only one in the ten minutes she watched ever won.

Eventually Eve stopped to watch a vendor put a Voltorb under oversized cups, switching them backwards and forth randomly then asking a watcher to choose which cup the Voltorb was under. She stopped here to watch, pleased she found a sideshow that didn’t seem to be rigged against the odds. A dark-haired boy about her age was up next, and Eve watched with interest as he tried his luck.
It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.

Sinclair | Viridian City | Festival Day

Now, perhaps it wasn't quite polite to think Viridian was tiny, but it was only the truth. Besides, it wasn't as if being a small city was bad. It just made everything a lot less fun and whole lot more predictable. Sin had long ago memorized the alleys and stagnant buildings of the city. It was static, so static, nothing at all like Celadon with its ever-changing landscape. There were new buildings being built everyday in Celadon, but in Viridian? Seemed as if there were more trees than buildings, to be honest.

Still, this year was different, because this year, Sin was going to head for the league on his own.

Father still had reserves about his only heir heading out into the world alone, and Sin didn't really blame him - Sin wouldn't want to lose him if he was his father, after all. However, Sin could take care of himself.

The blond had carefully chosen his clothes for today, and it certainly paid off. He looked so much better than everyone else on the streets today. Even better, the sunlight leaking from the back of various -tackier- stalls cast him in a beautiful light. It did not occur to Sin that he was easily mistaken for a girl in the mess of people, pretty as he was with his blond hair and big green eyes.

Beside him, Cade sniffed the air and glanced at a stall selling Pokemon treats. Noah seemed more focused on playing tricks on people, squirting small spouts of water at those with perfectly coifed hair (and with good reason, Sin thought - coifs were so passé). Sin decided that he could indulge his Pokémon today, and approached the stall with his usual confident smugness.

What was this? Exotic poffins? Sin peered at the poffins presented before him, an array of colors and sizes, each proclaiming different flavors. 'Almian Berry,' 'Hoenn Beef,' and even 'Johto Frogs'. Cade and Noah didn't seem too interested in the frogs, thank God, and he supposed all the walking might have made his Pokemon hungry. Judging from the large brick-red building in front of him, he'd already circled town and was on his way back towards the block selling all products manufactured by his father's corporation.

No wonder the crowds were getting thicker. Only made sense they were surging towards the main block in town. It was the only place worth seeing and possibly buying from.

Sin refocused his attention on the poffins. A little adventure never did anyone harm. He poked a Johto Frog poffin. To his delight, it ribbitted. Sin's eyes lit up chidishly. "Whoa. How's you do that? Hold - never mind. You'd never tell me, would you? But promise me you didn't put any real frogs in this - wait, did you? Is that why they croak? That's amazing." He didn't afford any spaces for the shopkeeper to enter the conversation. "All right, then. What'd you recommend? I'll take five of the frogs, by the way."

Cade's face scrunched up, but at least Noah seemed curious. Sin petted Cade. "A little adventure, friend. Everyone needs it."

Cade let out a low growl and shook his head, resigned to his fate.

"Five?" The shopkeeper echoed. "They're not chea-"

Sin's eyes narrowed for a moment, then he resumed his usual smirk and waved it away. Why must people always assume the worst of him? It wasn't because he was dressed cheaply - did he even look like anyone else here? Perhaps someone else with good taste wore the same clothes, but it was unlikely. No, it was probably because Sin came off down to earth. Lawrence had taught him to never look down on others. The smirk slipped into a kinder smile. "Money isn't a problem. Give me five frog poffins, and five of every other strange poffin you have, my friend." A pause. "And two each of these," Sin added, pointing at Noah and Cade's favorite flavors.

Sin's credit card glinted in the red light of the shopkeeper's stall. Suddenly, the shopkeeper moved a lot faster than usual, bustling here and there, and leaving Sin alone to survey the crowds again.
"The moral of this story, is that if I cause a stranger to choke to death for my amusement, what do you think I’ll do to you if you don’t tell me who ordered you to kill Colosimo?“

David

Focus. So much focus, all on the cups.

There was nothing but the cups, David. Nothing. But. The cups. And then the cups moved. Rapidly.

David's eyes kept moving with the man's hands, watching the cup--Voltorb's cup as it passed from place to place. It was just like how he used to play the game with his mom back on the farm when there was nothing else to do. She'd take one of his Pokeballs and hide it under a cup and scramble them just like this carnie...and David knew how to win the game.

And when the cups stopped, he stared at the cup. His cup. It was intense. It was his moment. Epic music played in his head, roaring in his ears like he was at a metal concert...and David picked up the cup, revealing nothing.

His expression melted, confidence shot. "B-but I was sure of it..." He made an awkward face, scrunching his lips together as he peered at the Carnie and back at the cups. And then he flipped over each one, revealing a distressing lack of Voltorb spheres. And David stared at the Carnie, even though he was just a kid, and thought of some way to threaten him.

"You...you're a cheater." There was silence between the two. The man just sighed and nodded, taking his hat from his head and placing it over his chest. The poor guy was completely bald, head shining in the bright sunlight. And he shook his head.

"I am." His accent was so thick, so Italian that David half-expected him to hand over a plate of spaghetti. Was that racist? David wasn't sure. "Please do not tell anyone, or else my business will be ruined!"

"I'll keep my mouth shut," David said, grinning, "if you give me my prize."

Out of the corner of his eye, David caught a blonde from the corner of his eye. She was staring at the duo at the game kiosk like a Magikarp out of water. While the Carnie dug for his prize, David turned to her, smiling. "Hi there," he said, waving.

The girl smiled suddenly and walked up, bright eyes upcast at him. "You've been here before?"

David nodded. "I come here every year," he said. "Up until now, I haven't been able to be a trainer, though."

The blonde laughed. "Your accent is funny."

"Accent?" David tried listening to his own voice, but didn't catch anything funky about it.

"You're from the country, aren't you?" He nodded. "I can tell by your voice. And you seem nice enough not to be from a big city." She nodded. "I'm Eve, and I'm pretty hopelessly lost."

David grinned. "I can show ya around if you want." He looked back to the Carnie, who gave him a bottle of Potion.

"You have-a five squirts in there."

David nodded and began to walk off with Eve. "Thanks, Carnie man."

"The name's Big Bald Tony--" but they were gone.

"So you're a trainer?"

Eve nodded, pulling two Pokeballs from her belt. "I have only two, but they're amazing...and will be incredible some day."

David grinned. "I like confidence, but they're sure to be no match for my team. My boys are the best there are, and I'm going to prove how much we can do."

Eve stopped, a small fire in her eyes. "I don't even know your name, but you sure are confident."

"My name's David." He slid a hand through his hair, smiling. "Wanna go see some battles? There's a battle tent in the town square."

"That's exactly what I was looking for earlier." She took a bottle of water from her bag and took a long drink.

"Alright then. Let's get you outta the sun."
