Carbon dioxide (Short for Co2), is a vital atmospheric gas, crucial for environmental balance. Co2 was discovered by Joseph Black in the mid 18th century during his combustion studies.

Co2’s impact on earth

Carbon Dioxide dissolves in seawater, causing ocean acidification, hurting sea life. Extra carbon dioxide contributes to global warming, leading to unfortunate effects. Co2 makes up an estimated 0.04% of planet earth’s atmosphere. It also acts as a greenhouse gas, trapping heat to regulate earth's temperature. Human footprint, especially fossil fuel burning, are responsible for increasing carbon dioxide levels.

Classification

Carbon dioxide generally exists as a gas, but it can transform into a solid such as dry ice, or dissolve into water, this can be used for cooling and special effects. Co2 acts as a greenhouse gas, which is very important for warmth.

Co2 in everyday life

Co2 is used in industrial processes. Carbon dioxide is also used to carbonate drinks, such as sparkling water or soft drinks. Co2 fire extinguishers work by displacing oxygen, suffocating the flames.

Co2 stands for carbon dioxide and is invisible to the human eye.
