3. An Arising Foe
Ryuu was hunched over a tin of off-white paint. She was repainting the fence because it had been covered in blood after the nights beating. This was had to be done after some of the more serious beatings. She still had her bag on her back because she hadn’t had the time to take it off. Ryuu wiped away the sweat that had formed in small droplets on her forehead. She sighed and began to pack away the paint. She was absolutely covered in the stuff but she doubted she would be able to go for a shower. “Ryuu, get you lazy fat arse in here before I come out and bash your thick head in!” screamed her father. Ryuu dropped her tin of paint and raced inside. She slowed in front of her father but hadn’t quite come to a stop when Ryuu heard a loud crash behind her. She spun around to see her mother’s favourite jar in a thousand pieces. She turned back around, took one look at her father’s face and ran.

Ryuu sprinted through the town desperate to get away from her father. She could hear him running after her. The heavy thud of is footsteps began to get nearer. Fear shot through her, making it feel like her stomach was being ripped open by sharp claws. She ran faster, desperation creased her young face. Eventually he stopped following her. “If you even think about coming home you little bitch I will be rip you apart with my bare hands!” her father screamed in the distance. Ryuu ignored him and just kept running.

Ryuu ran and ran, not even knowing where her feet were taking her. One moment she had the hard stone street underneath her worn out boots, the next it was the uneven dirt and rocks of the forest. Ryuu closed her eyes and allowed herself to be led purely by instinct.

For many hours she travelled, father into the forest than she had ever been before. Ryuu began to feel the cold bite of the wind against her face. She pulled her stained, torn hood over her head and continued to travel along, not watching where she was going. Her mind was in the past thinking back as far as she could remember. All she could remember was being beaten, working and almost dying from starvation. For the nine short years of her life Ryuu could not remember a time where she was happy, apart from when she met Sherry. Ryuu sighed and pulled out her potion. She was considering drinking it, hoping that it would end all her misery when she tripped over an unseen tree root that was sticking up out of the ground. She fell over with a quiet cry, the potion coming out of her hand and smashing a few feet away. Ryuu groaned and watched helplessly as her assignment vanished into the earth. She sighed and rose to her feet. She went to walk in the direction of home when she saw something the scared the shit out of her.

Ryuu watched as a hand dug through the earth, soon followed by an armand a body. Ryuu froze, she didn’t know what to do. She ran into a small bush and watched as the person came out of the earth, covered in dirt. Once he had dragged himself out he dusted himself off and looked around. Ryuu was scared stiff. Was he a zombie? Will he see her? What will happen if hefinds her? Her heart faced at what seemed like a thousand miles an minute. “Hmm. Where am I. More importantly, how am I here.” The person murmmered to himself. Ryuu held her breath. The person shrugged and left, leaving Ryuu confused and frightened. What had she done? She rose and fled, running for town.
